Tales & Trivia

blogmiss-copyYay! The full version of Miss Trivia came out today! Filled to the brim with 5000 drink related questions, difficulty levels, categories, single or multi-player options, and fun faux prizes. There are a few kinks to work out that bother me, but it will be updated by next week. Simply tap the App Store icon on your iPhone/iTouch and  “search” Miss Trivia or Cheryl Charming to find it. Then download. You can also download from iTunes on your computer. If you like it then leave a review! More questions will be added as time goes by.

blogtalesI also wanted everyone to know that Tales of the Cocktail just put their tickets up for sale. I will post more on Tales, but first, if you plan to attend, I wanted you to start thinking about reserving a spot for a Spirited Dinner because they fill up very fast (only a limited amount of spaces are available to keep the dinners intimate). It’s Thursday, July 9, 2009 at 8:00 PM - 11:00 PM.

What is it?
Each Spirited Dinner will have a distinctive menu with a range of cuisine from appetizers to desserts, served along with extraordinary cocktails of all variations and flavors. At each spirited dinner, a team of authors, mixologists, and bar-chefs have worked alongside New Orleans’ most prestigious restaurants to bring you a unique and exciting menu.

The Spirited Dinner restaurants include; Antoine’, Bacco, Bayona, Bombay Club, Bourbon House, Broussard’s, Café Adelaide, Calcasieu, CURE, Emeril’s Delmonico, GW Fins, Iris, La Cote Brasserie, Maximo’s, MILA, Morton’s, Muriel’s, Palace Café, Pelican Club, Redfish Grill, Restaurant August, Rio Mar, Wolfe’s in the Warehouse, Wolfe’s of New Orleans, and Zoë.

I chose The Pelican Club, so if you want to eat with me then call the restaurant at 504-523-1504 during the day to make a reservation. It’s $100 and includes tax and gratuity.

blogpelicanThe Chef is Richard Hughes and the Bar Chefs are the incredible BarMagic team headed up up Tobin Ellis. Tobin is most recently recognized for being chosen the bartender (in all of America) to challenge celebrity Chef, Bobby Flay on his Food Network TV show,  Throwdown with Bobby Flay. Just check out this Cocktail & Food menu that will be served below! I love it!

Miss Trivia Zero

app8

Yeah, I know it’s really called Miss Trivia “Lite” in the Apple world, but I’m a Coke Zero fan and figured it was clever to use “Zero”since the app  is Free & Lite. This is the official announcement that Miss Trivia Lite is available for download. However, from clicking around on it, it appears I have a couple hiccups to work out. No worries, just know that I will be making the questions more readable, adding a sound “off” option, inserting a cash register chime for the correct answer (since the goal is to ring up the highest bar tab), shorten the wrong  answer buzz to one second, and allow a 6 second head start to read the question before the timer begins. The full version should be available in a matter of days, but if you see anything in the free lite version that I overlooked don’t hesitate to let me know.

How to Download an App
(First, make sure you’ve created an account with iTunes on your computer.)
Downloading applications to iPhone is easy. Just tap the App Store icon, browse whatever categories you’re interested in or search for a specific App then download your purchases wirelessly.
Once you own an application, the App Store automatically notifies you when there’s an update. Updates are free. You can even shop for applications on iTunes, then sync them to your iPhone/iTouch.

flipndrink

Another drink related app that became available this week is Gary Regan’s Flip ‘n Drink. Gary is one of the world’s renowned cocktail authors with “The Joy of Mixology” being his most prized publication so far. The photo of us above was taken minutes after finally meeting for the first time in 2007. I remember hoping that there wasn’t any black pepper in my teeth because the watermelon cocktail they passed around had black pepper flakes floating in it. Below is a YouTube demo of Flip ‘n Drink. One thing to know about the app is that it’s over 10mb, so you’ll have to download on your computer first (10mb is too big to download from the iPhone).

Liquid Nitrogen Cocktails

liquidnitrTonight I didn’t get to see my favorite person on TV (Adam Lambert) because President O’Bama was on, but I did get to catch Ted Allen afterwards on Food Detectives as Top Chef winner, Richard Blaise demonstrated how to make cool cocktails using a tank of liquid nitrogen. Man, did you ever think you’d see those 4 names together in one sentence? Anyway, Richard made a Gin & Tonic by making frozen gin ice cubes then filled the glass with tonic water, a frozen Tequila shot, a Mojito sorbet, and a frozen Martini. The ones I’d like to try are the Gin & Tonic and Mojito sorbet. I like my Classic Martinis cold, but I’m hesitant about a very cold & chunky Martini.

To see other molecular mixology creations click here. You’ll find an Inside Out Bloody Mary, nitro caipirinha, Champagne Lava Lamp, Martini Popsicles, Sazerac Gummy Bear, Gin & Tonic Jelly, Martini Sorbet with Olive Caviar, and more!

tocjamiecherylJamie Boudreau from spirits & cocktails.com is one of the world’s leading molecular mixologists. Below is a YouTube video of him making his MEXICAN CLOUD, a Tequila cocktail that includes rhubarb bitters and is topped with egg-white foam that’s flamed (toasted) with an atomized Chartreuse spritz.

Brando and Bacardi

bacardi

I received an interesting email from a Los Angeles man asking me if Bacardi was the first spirit brand mentioned in film. Based on my Silver Screen Cocktail page, I’d have to say Bacardi was first mentioned by Marlon Brando in the 1955 film, Guys & Dolls. (In 1955 Bacardi was still made in Santiago de Cuba before Castro took over. In 1960, Bacardi moved to Puerto Rico.) This is one of my all-time favorite Cocktail Cinema scenes.

If anyone knows of another brand mentioned before 1955 then please let me know! Many alcohol brands have been seen, but not actually verbalized in film.

1945 Scarlett Street: A Pinch Scotch bottle is given as a gift.
1962 Dr. No: Smirnoff vodka is shown in this first James Bond film.
1964 Goldfinger: Dom Perignon is seen.
1965 Thunderball: Dom Perignon is ordered and Smirnoff Blue is seen.
1967 You Only Live Twice: Stolichnaya vodka and Dom Perignon is seen.
1968 Funny Girl: Courvoisier is mentioned. Fast forward to 2:10 of the clip below.

Waiter: Courvoisier, Mr. Arnstein?
Omar Shariff: Yes, perfect. And a créme de menthe frappé.
Waiter: Yes, sir.
Barbra Streisand: I like that beard on that captain.
Makes him look trustworthy.
Omar Shariff: He wants me to bring you to his cabin for cocktails.

1972 Avanti: Bacardi is mentioned.
1973 Live and Let Die: Bollinger is mentioned and seen.
1978 Saturday Night Fever: Seagram’s 7 is mentioned.
1987 The Living Daylights: Stolichnaya vodka and Jim Beam Bourbon is seen.
1988 Cocktail: Bacardi, Jim Beam, King Louis XIII, and Remy Martin are seen.
1989 She’s Out of Control: Kahlua is mentioned.
1994 Ed Wood: Beefeater is mentioned.
1995: Goldeneye: Jack Daniels is seen.
2000: Nutty Professor II: Seagram’s 7 is mentioned.
2003 Mona Lisa Smile: Jack Daniels is mentioned.
2003 Bad Boys II: Bacardi is mentioned.
2004 Alfie: Stoli is mentioned.
2004 Meet the Fockers: Tanqueray is seen.
2004 Flight of the Phonix: Bacardi is mentioned.
2004 After the Sunset: Jack Daniels is mentioned.
2004 Catwoman: Kahlua is mentioned.
2005 Kiss Kiss Bang Bang: Jack Daniels is mentioned.
2008 27 Dresses: Greygoose vodka is mentioned.
2008 Forgetting Sarah Marshall: Malibu rum is seen.
2008 The Love Guru: Frangelico is mentioned.

Here’s the Milk Punch recipe we served at last years Cocktail Film Fest (in coconut cups) when we showed the 1955 film, Guys & Dolls. It was created by H. Joseph Ehrmann, the owner of the award-winning San Francisco bar, Elixir.

Charming Rachael

rrWell, I was going to talk about the 2009 Domaine De Canton Bartender of the Year Competition, but I can’t find any information on it except that my friend,  John Lermayer won. Didn’t he just win the Iron Chef Bar Challenge at Tales of the Cocktail? I’m sure once the journalists and photographers recover from the Saint Martin trip we’ll be hearing and seeing more about it.

In the meantime, I can talk about me. You can find my contribution to the Parties 101 section of the Everyday with Rachael Ray April issue on stands now. Grab one next time you’re at the grocery store and flip to page 103.

Can’t tell you enough how nice it is to see your name in a magazine, especially when they do a great job of laying it out. Rachael has some fun  cocktail recipes (with images) on her online mag called Cool Cocktails, so check them out to spark some ideas! I’ve included my fav below that was contributed from my friend, . And oh, here’s the link to tell the editors that you want to see more of Cheryl Charming in Rachael Ray’s mag and that Rachael and Cheryl should team up and and Charming should have her own column in Ray’s mag and…well, you get the Charming Rachael idea :) Just click here.

lavanda Lavanda

• 2 cups sugar
• 1/4 cup plus 1 teaspoon fresh lavender leaves (or 2 teaspoons dried lavender leaves), plus 1 sprig for garnish.
• 3 tablespoons of gin (I recommend Hendrick’s)
• Chilled Prosecco

1. In a small saucepan, combine the sugar, 1/4 cup fresh lavender leaves (or 1 teaspoon dried lavender) and 1 1/2 cups water. Bring to a low boil over medium-high heat. Lower the heat and simmer, stirring, for 5 minutes. Let cool.

2. In a shaker, combine the remaining 1 teaspoon fresh or dried lavender leaves, the gin and 1 1/2 tablespoons lavender syrup (reserve the remaining syrup for another use); muddle, using a wooden spoon. Add ice cubes and shake. Strain the mixture into a Champagne flute and top with Prosecco. Garnish with the lavender sprig.

The kgb Daiquiri

kgb

So, I’m up working late on my new drink trivia iPhone app that will be coming out in a few weeks (learn more by clicking the “Charming Products” tab or here) and decided to take a break. Hmmmm, it hit me that I hadn’t put out a blog post in over 10 days so I click through my “ideas” folder. After a minute, I find myself tempted to see if you knew that Britney Spears applied for a bartender job back in 2007, since today was the kick-off of her new tour in New Orleans…It’s true! she actually applied at the Viceroy Hotel in Santa Monica, California to tend bar at the Cameo bar. Just google it. Just then a commercial (see below) comes on in between Craig Ferguson interviewing Desmond Tutu on the The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson. The commercial is about two poolside sunbathing girls that text for the recipe of a Daiquiri. The two knowledge experts jump in their Smart Car to show up in person. The most exciting part is that the answer in the commercial actually includes fresh lime juice and sugar syrup!

The company advertised in the commercial is called kgb (Knowledge Generation Bureau). They say to text 542542 for any question you may have and they will answer you.  I checked out their website and it appears that they’ve only made about 6 commercials and 2 of them are bar-related. The other bar-related one takes place in a bar, but it’s not posted on YouTube yet.

DAIQUIRI
2 oz light rum
1 oz fresh lime juice
1 oz simple syrup
Shake all ingredients with ice and strain into a chilled cocktail glass.

Here’s David Wondrich’s take on the Daiquiri.
